Alan Hubbard Nichols passed away at the age of 82 on Friday, September 25, 2026. In his final days, he was surrounded by his close family and many visitors.

Alan was born on April 8, 1944, to Vera and John Nichols in Oneida, New York. Alan lived most of his adult life in Michigan and moved to Ludington, Michigan with his family in 1991 when he became the Business Manager at the Ludington Daily News, retiring in 2011.

Alan is survived by his wife and best friend of 43 years, Ellen Nichols, or as he lovingly referred to her, “His Bride.” He is also survived by his daughters Kathryn (Katie) Nichols and Emily Nichols (Kevin Bos), grandsons Oscar Nichols and Harrison Bos, and sister Nancy Boyd. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother John (Jack) Nichols.

Alan’s greatest pride in life was seeing his daughters’ successes. Nothing made him happier than witnessing their accomplishments and he never missed an opportunity to tell anyone who would listen how proud he was of them. In recent years, that included both becoming first-time parents and him becoming a grandfather. During his daughters’ younger years, Alan never missed a swim meet, softball game, or school event. He would often be one of the first parents to volunteer to coach their youth tee ball teams or be a timer at a home swim meet, often because he thought Emily could hear him cheer louder if he was closer to the action. He probably still knew her best times and splits years later. He provided unwavering encouragement and support in their ambitions, including sharing a passion in accounting and finances with Katie that started with them playing together on his 10-key, which she still uses today.

Alan loved spoiling his adored pets. He couldn’t resist sneaking them additional treats and all the dogs knew to sit next to him during meals because they would end up with an additional serving of ham, turkey, or steak under the table. One of his favorite pastimes was taking his dog Mandi, for long walks in the Ludington State Park.

Alan had a knack for striking up a conversation with anyone he met, whether it be the server at a restaurant, someone at the check-out counter, or a casual acquaintance. He was charming, quick-witted, and wonderfully stubborn. This combination made him a regular converser and debater about politics, sports, finances, or puzzles, although he would fondly tell you he had not won an exchange against his wife or daughters in decades.

A private memorial for immediate family is planned for a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Bellwether Harbor Animal Shelter in Fremont, Michigan.
