Obituary

Anna Mae Smith, 93, of Buckley, died Saturday, May 27, 2023, at Culver Meadows Senior Living in Traverse City, just one day shy of her 94th birthday --- an age no one in her family had reached.  She was born May 28, 1929, in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Julius and Mabel (Miesch) Schichtel.

Anna Mae spent the first part of her life in Fruitport before her family moved to Buckley.  One of ten children, she grew up on the family farm and developed a lifelong love for gardening and canning.  Anna Mae was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who never turned down the chance to hold a baby.  No one left her home hungry; whether homemade soups, donuts, or other goodies, she always had something ready for her children and grandchildren when they came through her door.

Anna Mae was a member of St. Mary of Hannah Catholic Church in Kingsley.  She was also an Avon Lady for many years and was a caregiver of Gladys Nicewander.

Anna Mae is survived by: her children, Vincent Smith of Buckley, Raymond (Sandra) Smith of Traverse City, Dinell Cooper of Kingsley, Bernie (Steve) Cole of Traverse City, Mabel Schopieray of Buckley, Mary (Mickey) Hansen of Buckley, Floyd (Adrienne) Smith of Buckley, and Judy Smith of Buckley; 18 grandchildren; numerous great and great-great-grandchildren; and siblings, Linda (Gary) Crain of Traverse City, Jerry (Vivian) Schichtel of Traverse City, Dave Schichtel of Traverse City, and Norman (Pat) Schichtel of Buckley.

In 1950, Anna Mae married Floyd Max Smith who preceded her in death in 1974.  She was also preceded in death by: her parents; grandson, Christopher Hansen; step-grandson, Danny Todd Schopieray; son-in-law, Daniel J. Schopieray; and siblings, Lucille Schichtel, Bud Schichtel, Kathy Yuresko, Margaret Allen, and Alice Zakrajsek.
