Obituary

Frances Elizabeth "Betty" Klemm Holzhauer, 107, died November 8th, 2024 in Williamsburg, Michigan. She is survived by her sons, Mansur Otis Johnson of Tucson and Gregory (Louise) Holzhauer of Orlando; her grandchildren, Nathan (Jargalan) Johnson, Qayyum (Betsy) Johnson, Kirpal (Liliana) Johnson, Yusuf Johnson, Maike (Carlos) Pacheco, and Andrew (Ellen) Holzhauer; as well as five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley, who died on October 16th, 2019.

Betty was born in Bloomington, Illinois on March 27, 1917. She attended Duke University where she met Otis Johnson, Jr. They were married in 1939, and their only son was born in 1941. After her husband's early death, Betty worked as a secretary at Washington School in Bloomington. There she met science teacher, Stanley Holzhauer, and they were wed in 1954. Their son, Greg, was born in 1958. Stan and Betty celebrated 65 years of marriage together dancing to their theme song, "It Had to Be You."

Betty spent every summer of her life on Elk Lake, beginning at Rex Terrace, and Stan later built a cottage for the family just a little further down the shore. In 1980 she and Stan moved to their acreage on Rex Terrace Road permanently. There they enjoyed many happy years of farming, mission trips to Mexico, world travel, and lake life. Betty will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, community volunteer, and church elder. She loved to dance, play bridge, create needlepoint art, cross-country ski, fish, and garden with Stan. She was blessed with an extraordinarily long life and touched many people with her kindness.

A memorial service is planned for next summer.

Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, Covell-Elk Rapids Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
