Obituary

Captain John J. "Jack" King, USN (Ret.), 83, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2020, in Poquoson, Virginia. Jack was born and raised in New Jersey and attended the United States Naval Academy where he majored in marine engineering.

Jack spent most of his 22-year Naval career on nuclear submarines. The family moved back and forth between Connecticut and Virginia during those years. Jack served on one destroyer, two ballistic missile submarines, and three attack submarines. He commanded the USS Cavalla from 1974-1978. After retiring from the Navy, Jack continued to work in the defense industry for another 23 years, retiring as a US Navy Nuclear Fuel Program Process Engineer. Jack loved sailing, the Navy, long distance road trips, storytelling, and above all else, visiting with family and friends.
Jack is survived by: his children, Patty (Mike) Mastracci, Cathy (Erich) Buckenmaier, and Tom King; grandchildren, Brian, Sam, Tim (Julia), Alexa, Kevin, Nick, Riley, Kyle, Brynn, Owen, and Matt; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Jack was preceded in death by: his wife, Mary Harris King; parents, Charles King and Marie King White; siblings, Margaret Krall, Edward King, Coleman King, and Charles King; and nephew, Sean King.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, September 2, 2020, in Pentwater Township Cemetery, 8060 North Business 31, Pentwater, Michigan.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America or the United States Naval Academy Foundation.
