Charles "Charlie" Eugene Newberry, 93 of Elk Rapids, passed away peacefully, Sunday, July 13, 2025.
Charlie was born August 5, 1931 in Frankfort, Michigan, the son of Charles and Myrtle (Johnson) Newberry. He grew up in Arcadia, Michigan. Charlie served our country honorably in the United States Air Force from 1952-1956. After returning to civilian life, he did carpentry work in the Frankfort area. In 1961 he moved to Elk Rapids to work at Super Tool factory for 30 years.
On June 20, 1964, he married Jeanne Taylor in Alba, Michigan and recently celebrated 61 years of marriage. Charlie was a member of Kewadin Community Church. After his retirement, Charlie was known as the "Candy Man" around town. He enjoyed visiting stores, schools and offices, passing out candy. He was featured in the Elk Rapids News for the "Caught You Being Good" award, "Northern Folks" article by Jackie Weber and "Letters from A Small-Town Editor" by Savannah Tengelitsch. He was a Jack of All Trades and a hard worker. After retiring, he and his wife enjoyed traveling together.
He is survived by his wife Jeanne and three daughters "Charlie's Angels": Brenda (Ron) Sievert, Lorna (Ross) Clement and Alison (David) Mulliner; Three grandchildren Kelly Sievert (Ross Fitzpatrick), Jonathan Laskey (fiancée Aliyah Nowlin) and Tracy Sievert and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, six siblings: Gertrude Gross, Robert Newberry, David Newberry, Charla Moore, Marilyn Rice and Deanna Hull.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 11 AM at Kewadin Community Church, 7234 Cairn Highway with visitation beginning at 10 AM at the church.
