Obituary

Charlotte Marie (Lathrop) Betka, 70, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2025 in Ludington listening to her favorite song after spending her final days in the company of dear friends and family.

Born May 13, 1955, as the youngest child of Eugene and Maxine (Wagner) Lathrop of Scottville, Charlotte spent her formative years in and around the orchards of Riverton Township. After graduating from Mason County Central, she went on to attend Olivet College where she pursued a degree in music. As a member of Alpha Lambda Epsilon sorority, she learned to recite the Greek alphabet three times on a burning match, a party trick that never ceased to amaze. We think.

Charlotte was crowned Michigan Apple Queen in 1977, a fitting title for her majesty. After being married in 1978, she settled into her favorite role: Queen and Mother of the Fruit Farm. Family, music, and community engagement defined Charlotte's worldview. This includes a musical legacy that spans decades in the Ludington area and beyond. From West Shore Community College to Ludington High School to St. Simon's Church, her musical knowledge and ability to teach have inspired so many. Generations of young people received unconditional love and vibrant support from "Mama Char" because her mind, heart, and doors were open to all.

The true passion in Charlotte's life was spending time and sharing laughter with her children and their loved ones. Their travels together, fur baby snuggles, disaster movie marathons, and her unconditional love will always be remembered. These precious memories will carry her presence forward and serve as a constant reminder of how we can mindfully navigate the world while celebrating the purpose in others.

Survived by her four eternally grateful children, Thomas (Nicky), Andrew (Bart), Eirann (Jenna), and Matthew (Michael) and two siblings Pat and Jeanine. Charlotte's children want to provide an extra special thanks to Aunt Deb for her guidance, expertise, and continued presence. You are loved.

Per Charlotte's request, her Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, May 26th from 2-6 pm at Scotty's Restaurant in Ludington with open remarks starting at 4 pm. Charlotte specifically asked for her family and friends to share stories, laugh together, and wear their brightest colors.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made in Mama Char's name to the Ludington Drama Department: https://gofund.me/dcda4004
