It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Claude James DiGiovanni on June 5, 2026. Born on April 17, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, Claude—known as Jim—married his high school sweetheart, Janet, in 1957.
Jim was best known for his hard work, integrity, and determination. A perfectionist with a generous heart, he would move mountains for the people he loved. In 1975, he moved Janet and their family from Detroit to Elk Rapids in search of a quieter life. With his last dollar, he bought property on Grand Traverse Bay and slowly built a home and a new life. The move brought challenges, including adjusting to a new community and starting his own masonry company. But his talent and work ethic quickly earned him recognition, and his stone fireplaces became true works of art.
In retirement, Jim’s talents flourished. He became a gifted potter, as well as a skilled woodworker and gardener. His family is grateful to have and treasure his pottery and woodworking creations. Jim and Janet also enjoyed golfing with friends and hosting memorable Italian dinner parties. He generously gave his time to improve the golf course, bathrooms, and grounds, and he also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, helping build homes for others.
Jim found his greatest joy in time spent with those he loved most. Whether you called him Dad, Grandpa, Great Grandpa, Brother, or Friend, he loved telling old stories about family, work, and his Italian beginnings in Detroit. His brother Michael and his best friend Jerry brought endless pride and happiness to his life right until the end.
Jim was blessed by the love of his beloved wife, Janet, and their three children: Deborah (John), Gary (Vickie), and Edward (Elaine). He also leaves behind his grandchildren—Jacqueline, Phil, Jimmy, Renee, Michael, Theresa, Shane, Dylan, Morgan, Nikole, Pat, Anthony, Bailey, Jenna, and Tim—as well as twelve great-grandchildren.
Jim was strong and sassy down to his last breath. Life will be difficult without him, but we will continue to carry his love in our hearts throughout the rest of our lives. The stories and memories we have of Jim will continue to make us chuckle, smile, and bring us peace. His love and strength will continue to live on through the family he treasured. Jim was one of a kind. When we look out at the sparkling blue water, or the stunning sunsets over Grand Traverse Bay we will know that he is at Peace.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM, Friday, June 19, 2026, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 143 Charles Street, Elk Rapids, Michigan 49629, with the Rev.
