Obituary

C. Scott Rose, DDS, passed away on November 30, 2018 after a long battle with lymphoma. He was a pillar of the Ludington community in service, faith, healthcare and athletics.

Scott Rose, born in Detroit Michigan, to Clifford and Carol Rose was raised in Jackson, Michigan. He has two sisters who reside in Farmington Hills and Rochester, Michigan.

He attended Queen of the Miraculous Medal Elementary School and St. John's Catholic High School (class of 1964). He attended Jackson Community College for two years before transferring to Western Michigan University to earn his Bachelor's degree in Biology in 1968.

Scott married Gig Calkin on August 9, 1969 in Kalamazoo, Michigan at St. Augustine's Catholic Church. Upon marriage, Scott was embraced by his wife's family and became a great favorite among her enormous extended family.

Dr. Rose moved to Ludington with his wife Gig Rose in 1973 after he graduated from University of Detroit Dental School (class of 1972). Dr. Rose was charmed by the quaint lakeshore town and chose to establish a dental practice in Ludington. Soon he was serving a wide population of residents' dental needs in his thriving practice. Dr. Rose remained on-call for emergency cases on weekends and evenings. He believed strongly in the quality of his craft and kept abreast of new techniques throughout his career. Patients remember his jovial smile, high-quality dental care and genuine interest in their holistic well-being. Dr. Rose retired several times, but, on each occasion, his desire to care for residents of Mason County and beyond always pulled him back into practice, including stints at Michigan Community Dental Clinic in Manistee and Baldwin Family Health Care. He ended his career while serving high-need populations and consulting on complicated dental cases in Baldwin, Michigan. Dr. Rose also enjoyed mentoring younger dentists and health professionals; those who valued his experience will not soon forget his encouragement. Former patients and mentees are encouraged to submit their thoughts of appreciation to https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100011483653663 . Scott was on the Memorial Medical Center Hospital Board for 17 years and was involved in The Michigan Dental Association at local, state and national levels throughout his professional life.

Scott, along with long-time friends, helped establish the Lakestride Half Marathon in Ludington in 1980, a race that continues to be highly enjoyed by runners today. Scott loved watching his children and grandchildren pursue athletics in a wide array of games and competitions. He could be found on the side-lines cheering loudly, yelling advice and generally being mistaken as the Head Coach to all who didn't know his enthusiasm for sports. He was a long-time Detroit Lions Football fan—a die-hard loyalist—who celebrated wins and losses in equally dramatic fashion. He was an avid cyclist through-out his adult life, participating in the Dick Allen Lansing to Mackinaw (DALMAC) bike tour, ending most summers pedaling across the Mackinac bridge. His biking group will miss their drafting buddy and self-appointed coach. When he wasn't pedaling his bike, he enjoyed fast rides in his car and on his motor cycle.

Scott was a beloved grandfather to 11 grandchildren who gave him the nickname "Fun Grandpa/Papa" as he was always happy to play games and joyfully hear about all of their ideas, creative pursuits, classes and activities. While he genuinely believed that everyone could and should change the course of the world for good, this was especially true for each of his grandchildren. They understood that his love for them was deep and wide. They will hold his memory close and cherish the time they had with him. His only regret in leaving this Earth was being unable to watch them continue to grow.

Scott and Gig were active parishioners of St. Simon's Catholic Church for 45 years and found their shared faith to be a source of strength in God and a guide toward commitment to one another. They enjoyed traveling together, praying together and caring for their home and garden together. Scott was often heard praising his wife's culinary skills, gardening prowess and her inspiring faith. He admired much about his wife, Gig, and celebrated her talents. They were married just shy of 50 years. Scott and Gig gave generously to their church community. At St. Simon's Scott was committed to leading a team of people who volunteered at Hospitality Inc., a shelter for those without homes. He enjoyed sharing his faith with those seeking warmth and Team Rose continues to serve the homeless. Parishioners are wrapping Gig in their comforting prayers at this difficult time.

Scott and Gig raised their four children into adulthood. Scott instilled in his children a deep respect for intellectual pursuits and teaching. He encouraged each of them to pursue graduate degrees. Heather Wickham holds a Master's in Counseling and Family Therapy from Western Michigan University and is a dedicated mother nurturing her own family with attentive care. Heather organizes and hosts a large family reunion every summer at her house on the 4 th of July; she is a driving force in keeping the Rose and Calkin families connected and well-fed. Tricia Taylor holds a Master's in Occupational Therapy from Western Michigan University and frequently translates her knowledge into fun and therapeutic activities for the children at Hope Reformed Church where she occupies the position of Children's Minister. Tricia also teaches piano lessons and plays a variety of instruments. Amanda Rose-Horne holds a Master's  in Anthropology from Northern Arizona University and a Master's in Social Work from The University of Michigan. She works on parenting research projects in the Psychiatry Department  at Michigan Medicine and provides clinical therapy to mothers and infants at The Maternal Health Network in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Nathan Rose holds a PhD in Cognitive Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis and is an Assistant Professor and the Director of The Cognitive Neuroscience of Memory and Aging Lab at the University of Notre Dame. He has published widely on memory and aging. Scott took great pride in his children's accomplishments and believed that he had done well in giving them a foundation to pursue their dreams.

Scott and Gig were blessed to watch their children marry and establish their own families. They welcomed each in-law with open arms. Scott was a father figure to his sons-in-laws and daughter-in-law, who frequently looked to him for advice and guidance. Scott admired his son-in-law, Josh Wickham, for his strong work ethic as owner of Heirloom Carpentry and fierce loyalty to his family. Scott and Josh spent many hours discussing business skills and hatching service plans for the community of Ludington. Scott admired his son-in-law ,Tim Taylor, for his spiritual leadership and public speaking skills as Head Pastor at Hope Reformed Church, in Grand Haven, Michigan. He was a constant support for Tim and enjoyed spiritual discussions on topics of mutual interest. Scott admired his son-in-law, Adam Horne, for his engaged fathering and commitment to providing high quality healthcare at Michigan Medicine. He celebrated Adam and Amanda's return to Michigan, after many years living in Arizona, with the zeal of a Patriarch who finally had all of his adult children living within driving distance. Scott admired his daughter-in-law, Denise Rose, for her wonderful sense of humor and often said that Denise had "a PhD in Nice." Nathan and Denise were frequent travel companions with Gig and Scott where Gig and Nathan pursued adventures, such as sky-diving in New Zealand, while Denise and Scott comfortably watched from the side-lines taking pictures and enjoying the feeling of solid ground.  Scott and Gig also welcomed many exchange students over the years, forging a special bond with Marcela Ferrero Ayala from Bogota, Colombia.

Dr. Scott Rose lived his life with intensity, faith, enthusiasm and love. Heather, Tricia, Amanda and Nathan are hoping that their Dad is "bouncing-back" into Heaven.
