Obituary

Daniel Marlow Coates, 72, went home to be with Our Lord and Savior on Saturday, March 10, 2018, after a four year battle with cancer. He passed away peacefully in Grand Rapids, Michigan, surrounded by his loving family.

Daniel was born on August 25, 1945, in Flint, Michigan. He moved to Ludington, Michigan, when he was 13, and resided there until his passing. He graduated in 1964 from Ludington High School, and enlisted in the Army after graduation. He was stationed for four years in Germany, before being honorably discharged. He moved back to Ludington and began a career in banking at the National Bank of Ludington, working his way up to be appointed Assistant Vice President. After fifteen years in banking, he transitioned into the accounting and business management arena, where he remained until his retirement in 2010.

Daniel married Sheila Rae Hollick on May 16, 1970, and they spent 47 wonderful years together. On April 13, 1974, he and Sheila welcomed their first daughter, Melissa Mildred (Coates) Hacker. On December 15, 1975, he and Sheila welcomed their second daughter, Rebecca Rae Coates-Lee. Daniel's wife and daughters were his world. He always put their needs ahead of his own, and always made sure they knew how much he loved them. He was a man of his word, had strong religious and moral convictions, and was kind to everyone he met. He was loved by many and will be missed dearly.

Daniel is preceded in death by his father-in-law, Raymond Hollick, and by his mother-in-law, Mildred (Boseker) Hollick.

Daniel is survived by his devoted wife, Sheila (Hollick) Coates, his eldest daughter Melissa (Coates) Hacker and her husband, Raymond Hacker III of Shelby, Michigan; and by his youngest daughter, Rebecca Rae Coates-Lee and her husband William J. Lee II of East Grand Rapids, Michigan. Daniel is also survived by his five grandchildren who he loved so very much, Danielle Rae Hacker, Ray Ray Hacker, Wills Lee, Grace Lee, and Willa Rae Lee.
