Obituary

Dr. Daniel R. "Doc" Ellinger, D.V.M., died Sunday, September 30, 2007. He was born in Grand Rapids on May 7, 1927 to Daniel and Irmabell (Maskey) Ellinger. Doc married the former Geraldine Lofquist on April 8, 1989 in Cascade, MI. He was a U.S.Army veteran of W.W. II serving from 1945-1947, attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant. Dan received his education from Grand Rapids Junior College, University of Michigan and was a graduate of Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He was in private practice in Grand Rapids for 50 years, retiring in 1990. Following his official retirement, he assisted at the practice of Dr. Rick Scholfield, DVM in Grand Rapids for an additional five years. After moving to Pentwater, Doc still did veterinary consulting from his garage office. Dan was very active in community politics. He had served 20 years on the Cascade Township Board of Trustees. While residing in Pentwater since 1990, he served as a trustee for four years on the Pentwater Township Board of Trustees and was Pentwater Township Supervisor for eight years. Dan was a member of the Pentwater VFW Post 6017. He is survived by his wife, Geri of Pentwater; 3 sons, Daniel (Jodi) Ellinger of Fruitport, Douglas (Karyn) Ellinger of Ada, MI and David (Adrienne) Ellinger of Scottsdale, AZ; five grandchildren, Caitlin, Carly, Maxfield, Peter and Elizabeth; one brother, Robert Ellinger of East Grand Rapids, MI; step-children, Deborah (Mike) Koster of Escanaba, MI, David (Tamara) Steil of Grandville, Linda (Don) VanPortfliet of Belding, MI and Daniel (Jenny) Steil of Grand Rapids; step-daugher in law, Michelle Steil of Chicago; nine step-grandchildren, Aurora, Erin, Chelsea, Olivia, Andrea, Rachael, Angela, Caleb and Carlee; two step-nieces, Cam Morse Miles and Andrea Morse, both of Grand Rapids. He was preceded in death by a step-son, Craig Steil. He will be greatly missed by family and friends, especially his grandchildren, for whom he was affectionately known as "silly grandpa". The Funeral Service for Dr. Ellinger will be held Thursday, October 4, 2007 at Eleven O'clock from the Arsulowicz Brothers Mortuary, 3525 Remembrance Rd., Walker, with Fr. Anton Tran officiating. Interment in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, with full Military Rites provided by the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation Tuesday 2-4 & 7-9 P.M. at the Tate-King Funeral Home, Hart and Wednesday 2-4 & 7-9 P.M. at the Arsulowicz Brothers Mortuary, 3525 Remembrance Rd., Walker. Memorial contributions may be given to Harbor Hospice or to the Poppen Hospice House.
