Obituary

Dennis Michael Grant was an amazing man, a friend, a loved one, a mentor, and a hero. Denny was born in Ludington on November 21, 1951, to Arnold and Edith Grant, 64 years later he left us to walk with God on May 23, 2016. Denny attended Ludington High School in the class of 1971 where he met the love of his life, Peggy Shumsky. They fell in love when he was just 16 and just a few years later they were wed on August 16, 1974. Three years later their first son, Matthew, was born on July 25, 1977 and then just three more years down the road their second son, Brandon, was born on August 1, 1980. Dennis was the kind of man who was always looking for ways to help everyone around him and in 1986 he decided the best way to serve his community was to join Pere Marquette Fire Department. This year marked his 30th year of service alongside of his brothers. Den's courage and desire to help others sparked the same desires in his sons, who both came to join the fire department when they were old enough. Denny was not mentor only to his sons and family, but too many. He spent his years serving as many people as he could, no matter what that meant. If that meant running into a burning building, responding to a horrific accident, kissing a booboo, being a shoulder to cry on, or taking on a project, it didn't matter because he was going to be the first one to be there helping. His laugh and smile were contagious and anyone who met him knew just what a stinker he was. He would tease you and make you laugh until you cried. Anyone who knew him could see his love for children, whether it was his own grandchildren or a stranger's child, he had a way with them and he would drop everything just to get down on the floor and play. Denny and Peggy went for a ride on his motorcycle Sunday, May 22, 2016 to get some ice cream when they found themselves in an accident. He passed away doing something that he loved with the love of his life. Denny spent time with all of his family in the weeks leading to his passing and reached out to each family member to do something special with everyone. The entire family have hearts filled with joy for the life that he lived and the memories that they are able to cherish. Denny's kindness to all and his devotion and love to his community is a tribute to the beauty of his heart. His inspiring presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was employed as a heat treat operator at Great Lakes Casting Corporation from 1995 until present and was a member of St. Simon Catholic Church. Denny is survived by his wife, Peggy of Ludington; two children, Matthew (Kendra) Grant of Pittsburgh, PA and Brandon (Virginia) Grant of Ludington; five grandchildren, Caitlyn (Jimmy) Anderson of Ludington, Conner Grant, Ethan Grant, Carter Grant, and Hayden Grant; two sisters, Deborah (Robert) Pease of Grand Rapids, and Darcy (Gregg) Walker of Ludington; nieces and nephews, Robert (Amy) Pease of Grand Rapids, Courtney (Craig) VanVliet of Grand Rapids, Mark (Leia) Grant of Ludington, and Christa (Dan) LaDuke of Ludington; plus other nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; nephew, Geoffery Grant; great nephew, Nicholas Pease and great niece, Katie Lynn Irwin.
