Obituary

Mr. Donald Dwight McClennan, age 84, of Hart, passed away Wednesday, October 7, 2015. He was born August 11, 1931, in Hart to Robert and Phyllis (Tate) McClennan. He graduated from Hart High School with the Class of 1949, he graduated from Michigan State University with a master's degree in 1958 and served in the United States Army from May 02, 1954 – May 01, 1956 as a mortar instructor. On December 20, 1952 he married Virginia 'Ginny' Hawley at Hart Congregational Church; they were married sixty-two years.

Don was employed as an Elementary School Principal for Hart Public Schools for thirty two years and had taught school one year with Whitehall Schools. He was very dedicated to his students throughout his years of teaching and was best known to lead young school children in the Halloween costume parades.

As a member of the Alumni Association at MSU, he was an avid sports fan of MSU, baseball, football, basketball, and the Detroit Tigers. He collected baseball cards in his childhood years. He also was an avid reader of sports articles and had retained much about individual stats of athletes.

Don was a member of the American Legion Post 234 in Hart and was very active in the work at Veterans Memorial Park in Hart. He purchased many memorial bricks for area veterans and saw to the placement of them in the park.

Donald is survived by his wife, Virginia "Ginny" McClennan; two daughters, Debbie Cruz of Bradenton, FL, Dana (Phil Hayes) Besemer of Hart; four grandchildren, Josh Gautreau, Rachel Gautreau, Nathan Besemer, Madeline (Kash) Valley; five great grandchildren, Brayden & Haiven Gautreau, Jake Robert Besemer, Audrey Beintein and Jacey Valley; and one niece, Sandy Zeidler. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Michael in 1985; grandson, Jake Besemer in 2004; and sister, Patricia Zeidler.

The Memorial Service for Mr. McClennan will be Tuesday, October 13, 2015, at 2:00 pm at Hart Congregational United Church of Christ, 408 S. State St., Hart the with Rev. George E. Reed officiating. Interment will be in Hart Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. The family requests that any memorials be directed to Charity of the donor's choice or the Crystal Valley Care Fund, P.O. Box 451, Hart, MI 49420.
