Donald "Don" Wayne Swier, 84, of Ludington, passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2017, at Ludington Woods Assisted Living. He was born October 27, 1932, in Monmouth, Illinois, the son of Walter and Margaret (Wit) Swier.
Don graduated from Valparaiso Technical Institute with a degree in Radio Engineering. He worked for the Muskegon Chronicle for 7 years, then moved to Ludington where he was a hospital engineer at Memorial Hospital for 22 years until retiring in 1995. Don volunteered with the Red Cross Disaster Team, Habitat for Humanity and Give Kids the World in Kissimmee, Florida.
Don was member of the Community Church in Ludington for many years. He was also a licensed aviation pilot and loved flying his Cesna 172 and being involved with the Piper Aviation Museum. Don also enjoyed traveling with his 33' Holiday Rambler, playing golf, snowmobiling, photography, computers and spending winters in Florida. Most of all, Don loved being with his family, especially with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Don is survived by: his wife, Rosemary; 4 daughters, Sandra (Phill) Shelner of Comstock Park, Mary Jo (James) Hall of Canton, Donna (Gary) Weidenhamer of Jupiter, Florida, and Nancy Strzynski of Manistee; his step-daughter, Judy Balaban of Ringoes, New Jersey; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; his sister, Norma Vanderlaan of Whitehall; and 3 nephews.
Don was preceded in death by: his first wife, Marilyn on September 17, 1982; his son, Walter in 2015; and his grandson, Bradley Weidenhamer in 1993.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Friday, September 22, 2017, at Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, Pere Marquette Chapel, 309 S. Washington Ave., Ludington, with Pastor Brett Spalding officiating. Interment will follow in the Lakeview Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, from 6-8 PM, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to the Red Cross for Hurricane Irma Relief in Florida.
