Mrs. Doris Lorraine Papes, age 90, of Ludington, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2016, in Ludington. She was born March 30, 1925, in Freesoil to Albert and Anna (Treml) Fend. She was employed at the garment factory, Stokley's and the Sauble River Inn. Doris married Joseph Papes on June 12, 1948 at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Manistee. He preceded her in death on December 26, 1992.

Doris was all about her family. She loved to have her children and grandchildren come to visit her. She was known to many in the community as the Pumpkin Lady. Doris liked to work jigsaw puzzles, word search and senior citizen bingo. She was a fantastic pinochle card player. Listening to country music in her pastime and enjoyed going with friends for car rides throughout the countryside. Doris also prepared and home canned in her kitchen many vegetables and other things.

Doris is survived by one daughter: Joyce (Jim) Lokovich of Georgetown, KY and two sons: Jerome (Sandy) Papes of Ludington, and Tom (Willette) Papes of Versailles, KY; sister: Helen Merkey of Freesoil, and brother: Albert "Sonny" Fend, Jr. of Freesoil; she also has six grandchildren, Missy (Brian) Slimmen, Shelly (Justin) Ford, Jody Lokovich, Erica Papes, Jason (Lisa) Papes, Jesse Lokovich; eight great grandchildren, Rylee, Romelia, Harlow, CJ, Alex, Mason, Isabella and Alex; sister in law, Sophie Papes of Freesoil; sister in law, Dorothy Papes of Freesoil; brother in law, Alex Papes of Freesoil. Doris is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, many close friends and extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Joseph Papes, sister, Irene Fend, sister in law, Bernadine Fend, brother in law, Carl Merkey, and nephew, Rory Fend. Mrs. Papes' family wishes to thank the staff at Autumn Winds Care Center for the wonderful and loving care their mother received.

The Mass of the Resurrection for Mrs. Papes will be offered Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at 11:00 AM at St. Simon Catholic Church with Father Wayne B. Wheeler Jr. presiding. Visitation will be Tuesday one hour prior to the Mass at St. Simon Catholic Church, 702 East Bryant Road, Ludington. Interment will take place in Maple Grove Cemetery in Freesoil, MI. The family requests that any memorials be directed to Charity of your choice.
