Mrs. Dorothy Elaine Scofield, age 81, of Hart, passed peacefully into the hands of her Saviour on Saturday, December 3, 2011. She was born April 9, 1930, in Muskegon to Wilson and Zada (Fleming) Beam. Raised in Shelby and Hart, she graduated from Hart High School in 1948 before attending two years of college at Eastern Michigan University. Dorothy married Richard Scofield on August 26, 1950 in Hart and he preceded her in death on March 8, 2010. A member of First Presbyterian Church in Muskegon, she was also their beloved Christian Education director for more than twenty years, having a profound impact on both the youth and church family. She was a member and past president of Questers, a member of P.E.O. International, and one of the longest-serving tour guides at the Hackley and Hume Museum in Muskegon. For twenty-five years Dorothy, along with her sister-in-law Jennie Bruce, chronicled the important happenings of family far and near in the "Brucefield Bugle", a newsletter and photo montage published annually. She and her family had a summer cottage at Silver Lake, a family gathering spot where countless happy memories were made. Dorothy had a gift for hospitality-she made everyone she met feel welcome and important, especially children. She had a cheerful and positive disposition to her very last days.
Dorothy will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her, most especially her children, Brent (Joan) Scofield of Fruitport, and Denise (Jim) Jones of San Diego, CA; five grandchildren, Hanna Scofield, Nicholas Scofield, Brandon Greer, Kristen Greer, Erik Jones; two great-grandchildren, Sophia and Julius; one sister: Vivian (Bill) Beam-Fiori of Borrega Springs, CA; and sisters-in-law Jeannette Bruce of Grand Rapids and Anita Scofield of Mears, MI, as well as countless nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation for Mrs. Scofield will be Sunday December 18th from 6-8 p.m. at King Funeral Home in Hart, as well as one hour prior to the funeral service at the church the following day. Funeral services will be Monday, December 19, 2011, at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church in Muskegon with Rev. James Rausch officiating. The family requests that any memorials be directed to First Presbyterian Church Christian Education Fund.
