Maxine Gustafson, age 90, of Pentwater went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, April 9. She was born in Cadillac on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1918, to Edward F. and Edna Bell (Wyatt) Luhman. She grew up in Muskegon where her father built Luhman Floral. She graduated from Muskegon High School and attended Washington School for Secretaries in Washington, D.C., and Bethel College where she was secretary to the College President ('37-'38). On April 12, 1941, she married A. Rudy Gustafson of Muskegon and they made their home in Glenside. Maxine held various secretarial positions when she worked for the City of Muskegon. In 1948, with a desire to have their own business, Rudy and Maxine moved their family to Pentwater and purchased "Pentwater Appliance." The appliance business emerged into a gift emporium becoming "Gustafson's Gifts, World Marketplace." The Gustafson's made yearly trips abroad. Their travels took them around the world three times visiting missionaries while finding unusual and exotic items to sell in their store. In 1979 Maxine and Rudy sold the business to their son and daughter-in-law. Upon retiring, they volunteered in a missionary guest house for two years on the Island of Cebu, Philippines. Maxine has the gift of hospitality and she has served as a guide for Pioneer Girls Clubs, clerk, typed the bulletin, and in her early years played the piano in the Pentwater Baptist Church. Rudy, her husband of 67 years preceded her in death in 2008. She is survived by three children, Dean (Maureen) Gustafson of Pentwater, Miriam Gustafson of Grand Rapids, and Jane (Sam) Morrison of Pentwater. Mitra Fard (Jim) Delaney of Holland and Jean-Marie Laugginger of Grand Rapids are also "daughters" to Maxine. In addition she has six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Maxine died at home under the loving care of her family and Hospice. The Funeral Service for Mrs. Gustafson will be held Monday, April 13, 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, corner of First and Rutledge Streets, Pentwater, with Pastor Mark Lillie officiating. Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Muskegon.
