IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Edwin L.
Joba
February 15, 1925 – July 11, 2022
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Edwin L. Joba (Dzioba), age 97, passed away on Monday, July 11, 2022. Ed was vacationing with his family in Pentwater, Michigan, one of his favorite places. When he passed, he was surrounded by his loving family.
Ed was beloved by his family and many friends. He was known for his warm heart, kindness, quiet sparkle, and thoughtful mind. His positive and active approach to aging has inspired many.
Ed was born on February 15, 1925 in Battle Creek, Michigan, the son of Louis & Mary Dzioba, who immigrated from Ukraine through Ellis Island. He graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1943 and served in the US Navy Air Force in the Pacific during WWII. Ed graduated from Michigan State University in 1950. He retired from IBM in 1987 as a senior engineer after 37 years in the development labs in Poughkeepsie and Fishkill, where he worked on developing cutting edge computer technology.
Ed was an avid swimmer, earning 3 varsity letters in high school, 4 in college, and was also on the Navy swim team in Hawaii. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed sailing, canoeing, fishing, and hiking with his family throughout the Hudson Valley. Skiing, golfing and traveling were his interests in later life and he pursued these passions into his nineties. He enjoyed classical music and quiet jazz.
Ed's kind and generous spirit led him to serve as a deacon and elder in the First Presbyterian Church in Poughkeepsie, president of the Friends of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, a member of the La Grange Conservation Advisory Committee, a trail maintainer at Lake Minnewaska, and driver for Meals on Wheels. He was also a member of the Freedom Plains United Presbyterian Church and an active member of the Dutchess Golf & Country Club.
For over 40 years, Ed held an annual spaghetti dinner for his neighborhood, giving neighbors a wonderful opportunity to come together. This tradition is continuing, and he is fondly referred to as the heart of his neighborhood.
He is predeceased by his wife Barbara, brothers William & Dan and a sister Julia. He is survived by four children, Cynthia Joba of Bryn Mawr, PA, Robert Joba and wife Susan of Charlevoix, MI, Susan Ball and husband Frank of Mequon, WI, and Nancy Rosinski and husband Sandy of Westford, MA; seven grandchildren, Christine Ball Johnson, Emily and Michael Ball, Johnathan and Caitlin Joba, Brian and Caroline Rosinski; and one great grandchild, Riley Johnson.
A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at the Freedom Plains United Presbyterian Church, 1168 Route 55, LaGrangeville, NY, at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, July 25, 2022.
Memorial donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the Freedom Plains United Presbyterian Church or the Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley for the Ed & Barbara Joba Fund for the Hudson Valley Philharmonic.
