Elizabeth Jean LaPan
June 17,1932 – June 27, 2026
In loving memory of ‘Betty’ Jean LaPan , a remarkable woman whose journey touched many lives through her warmth, generosity and unwavering spirit. She was born on June 17, 1932 in Poughkeepsie, NY to Mary and Walter Scott. She passed away peacefully on June 27,2026, at the age of 94, leaving a legacy of compassion and resilience that will forever inspire those who met her.
Growing up on an apple orchard farm, she was instilled with the values of hard work and dedication, which guided her throughout her life. She was a devoted daughter and a beloved mother. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Dolton and her husband John, and her son, Timothy LaPan and his wife Sue.
An alumna of Albany Business College, Betty embarked on a rewarding career with IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY and later in Boulder, CO. A lover of quilting, in retirement she created the Colorado Quilt Trail as a member of the Colorado Chapter of Quilters, driving miles across the Front Range to deliver quilt “blocks’ that were then mounted on peoples’ businesses.
After moving to Traverse City, MI, Betty’s life continued to be a testament to her generous spirit. As a faithful member of St. Francis Catholic church she joined their quilting group, creating beautiful quilts and wall hangings for charity and the church.
Betty was also a dedicated volunteer for organizations such as the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the Alzheimer’s organization and the Father Fred Foundation. Her volunteer work was driven by a strong sense of empathy and a true desire to make a difference in the world.
When not volunteering, she loved to garden, was an avid reader and traveled extensively.
Betty embodied strength, courage and an unwavering commitment to her family and friends.
A Memorial Mass to celebrate her life will be held soon. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a life well lived, to share stories, and to honor a special woman who touched the lives of many.
Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, Covell-Traverse City Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
