Elizabeth "Betty" Newell, 83, of Kingsley, died Monday, November 6, 2023, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was born October 23, 1940, in Solon Township, the daughter of Felix and Pauline (Narloch) Garvin.
Betty graduated from Holy Rosary High School, in Cedar, on May 24, 1959. She married Edgar Newell at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, in Cedar, on October 14, 1961. Ed's Army service took the couple all over the world raising their children before finally settling in Kinglsey.
Betty was a devout Catholic and member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Fife Lake, and she was a proud ovarian cancer survivor. She worked at Sears in Traverse City, retiring in 2002. Many will remember her as "The Lotto Lady" at Northland Grocery in Kingsley.
In addition to her husband Ed, Betty is survived by: her children, Patrick (Deborah) Newell of Fife Lake, Juanita (Rip Kline) Clark of Kalkaska, Sheila (Brian) Wheeler of Kingsley, and Timothy (Missy) Newell of Kingsley; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; siblings, Roman Garvin, Staley Garvin, Alec Garvin, Josephine Boczar, Frances Mills, and Maxine Taylor; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Betty was preceded in death by: her parents; brother, Anthony Garvin; and sister, Matilda Pleva, as well as two infant siblings; and grandson, Jonathon Schaffer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Fife Lake. Interment will follow in St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3-5 PM, Monday, November 13, 2023, at Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, 200 N Brownson Avenue, Kingsley, Michigan 49649 where the Rosary will be prayed at 4:45 PM. Visitation will also be held from 10:00 AM until time of Mass at the church on Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Aloysius Catholic Church or to Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
