Obituary

Mrs. Eugenia Urick, age 94, passed away on December 29, 2006 at the Oceana County Medical Care Facility in Hart. Eugenia Bajer was born September 15, 1912 in Antopol, Belarus, the oldest of nine children of Leonty and Bassie Guter Bajer. As a child, she and her family endured the fierce fighting of World War I in their occupied war-torn country. She was married to Alex Urick in February 24, 1935 in Belarus and sailed to the United States in 1938 with her young daughter, Maria. Alex had gone ahead to prepare a place for them in Evanston, Illinois. In 1940, the family (which included Walter now) moved to Hart where they had a small farm and later, a dry cleaning shop called Urick's Dry Cleaners on Tyler Road just east of Hart. During the 40's Eugenia worked hard to help raise 4 children, and made Farmer's Cheese each week. The cheese was sent to Chicago and sold in the European community. When the Dry Cleaning Shop was opened in the late 40's, she worked along side her husband daily to provide a needed service in the community. October of 1969, had cause for great celebration. Eugenia became an American Citizen, something of which she was very proud. She loved her adopted country. One of her favorite songs was God Bless America. At the same time the family celebrated the safe homecoming of youngest son, John, from the jungles of Viet Nam. Eugenia took care of her husband until his death in 1985. After that, she continued to quietly live on the farm. Her warm hospitality was readily apparent, for when anyone would walk in the door, refreshments were always provided. Family dinners were a regular and the food was delicious. She loved her family and doted on her grandchildren. Her great grandchildren were a delight to her and, she took great joy watching them play together. In addition to her husband, Alex, she was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters. She is survived by 4 children; Mary (Bruce) Krueger of Montague, Walter (Karen) Urick of Hart, Lola (Dick) Bierschbach of Wyoming, Michigan, and John (Arta) Urick of Walkerville; 7 grandchildren Kristi (Jean-Marc) Defrasne of France, Rick Bierschbach of New York City, Jennifer Thomas of Indianapolis, Rebecca Krueger of San Francisco, Anna (Greg) Duggins of Muskegon, Aleksy (Rebecca) Urick of Silver Lake and Esther Urick of Covington, Kentucky; 4 great grandchildren Dinah, Ella & Tess Defrasne of France and Jack Duggins of Muskegon. The Funeral Service for Mrs. Urick will be held Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. from the Tate-King Funeral Home with Pastor Ben Lester officiating. Interment will be in the Hart Cemetery. Friends may meet the family Tuesday from 4-8 P.M. at the Tate-King Funeral Home and Wednesday, one hour prior to the service. Eugenia prefers memorial contributions be given to the Hart VFW Post 1329 or to the Hart United Methodist Church, in lieu of flowers.
