Obituary

Eunice Winifred Strait, 91, of Walkerville, was born February 14, 1929, at the Hart Hospital, the daughter of Thomas and Lida Dudley. The LORD called her to Heaven early in the morning on Tuesday, December 15, 2020.

Eunice lived on the same property near Walkerville from 1933 until 2019. She was employed at a number of jobs starting on the farm at the age of 5, and finally retiring at the age of 70 from her last part-time job. Eunice attended Sayles School in Elbridge Township, kindergarten through 8 th grade, and graduated from Walkerville High School, class of 1948. She shared fond tales of a class trip from Detroit, on a great lakes passenger steam boat, to Mackinac Island, onto Chicago, and back to Michigan; waiting on the dock for her boat to come in was a handsome young man, LeRoy Strait; he would marry her 10 months later.

After becoming a mom and housewife, Eunice did many hours of volunteer work; for her family she was a teacher, cheerleader, drill sergeant, referee, doctor, mom, chauffer, gardener, treasurer, and vacation planner. She also volunteered as a Girl Scout Troop Leader, many 4-H groups leader, a school room mother, church Sunday School teacher, and Bible Study teacher, which continued until after her grandchildren became students.

As a family, there was never a lot of money, but they never felt poor because Eunice, LeRoy, and extended family members always put forth lots of love. As a child of the Great Depression and WWII, Eunice never wanted to throw anything away.

Eunice is survived by: three daughters, Evelyn Miller of Fremont, Carol Bitson of Shelby, and Rose Purdy of Walkerville; one son, Gary (Colleen) Strait of Shelby; daughter-in-law, Lisa Strait of Eaton Rapids; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; in-laws, Jack (Mary) Strait, Stan (Mary) Strait, Leona Stalsberg, Rose Dudley, and Cheryl Dudley; and many nieces and nephews.

Eunice was preceded in death by: her parents; husband of 30 years, LeRoy Strait in 1979; and her youngest son, Willard Strait in 2011.

Memorial services and interment in Elbridge Township Cemetery will be held at a later date.

Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, King-Hart Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
