Frances Laura Harvey Ross
(1932 - 2022)
Frances Ross passed away June 13, 2022 at the age of 89. She was born in Jersey City, NJ to Delha White Harvey (Beecher) and Louis S. Harvey II. A graduate of Westfield (NJ) High School, she earned bachelor's degrees in English and History and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa at Bucknell University in Lewisburg PA. Hoping for a career in foreign service, she earned a master's degree in International Relations from NYU. Fran taught junior and senior high school in Connecticut until she married Thomas Ross Jr. in 1957 and moved to Michigan. Married for 56 years, they raised four children in Royal Oak, MI, where she also served as a substitute teacher in the Royal Oak Public Schools. In 1999, they moved to Newport News, VA to enjoy retirement. Fran eventually returned to Michigan following her husband's death to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and John Cappellucci, in Montague, MI.
A lover of music and the arts, Fran was a supporter of her children's artistic careers as well as a volunteer with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Ferguson Center for the Arts in Newport News, VA. She was also active with her churches volunteering and serving on the vestry. She and her husband loved exploring the world and over her lifetime Fran visited many countries.
Predeceased by her parents and brother Lewis S. Harvey III, she is survived by her children Laura Ross (Nashville, TN), Suzanne J. Ross (Chicago, IL), Thomas Ross III (Houston, TX), and Kathleen Cappellucci (Montague, MI); grandchildren Hannah Ross Green and James Thomas Green (both of Chicago, IL); and sister Barbara Harvey Porter (Catonsville, MD). Service and interment will be held at 10:00am on August 6, 2022 at St. James Episcopal Church in Birmingham, MI (355 W Maple Rd, Birmingham, MI 48009).
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Interlochen Center for the Arts ( www.interlochen.org ) or the Arts for All program at the Ferguson Center for the Arts in Newport News, VA ( www.fergusoncenter.org ).
