Obituary

Franklin A. (Pete) Sallgren, 92, of Whitehall, passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2022.  He was born on September 2, 1929, in Shelby, the son of Arthur and Ruth Sallgren.

In 1953, Franklin married Ruth Hartman and she precedes him in death.

Franklin proudly served our country in the United States Army as a medic at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, during the Korean War. He was an avid reader of WWII books and loved to see (and hear!) the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds.

Franklin worked at Shaw Walker for 47 years.  His work in painting office furniture led to him perfecting his craft and painting cars as a sideline. He always had an antique car and participated in many parades and car shows.  His favorite was his 1941 Chevy 2 door Coupe.  When he had his 1965 Ford Galaxy 500, he made a duplicate mini car and would pull it behind him in the parades, eliciting many delighted laughs and comments.  He loved to just drive around and pop in on his many friends and relatives for a cup of coffee.

Franklin loved his grandchildren and was thrilled with his great-grandchildren.  Place a baby in his arms and he was content.  He loved to share his stories of growing up during the Depression and WWII.  He was a simple, honorable man who led a simple, honorable life and will be greatly missed.

Franklin was preceded in death by: his parents; and siblings, Ethel, Robert, Alice, Dolly, Barbara, Lou, Orie, and Richard.

Franklin is survived by: his children, Dianne (Mike) Campbell and Tom Sallgren; grandchildren, Katie Campbell and Stuart (Molly) Campbell; and great-grandchildren, Jane, Ciaran, and Alasdair Campbell.

A graveside service with military honors will be held on Friday, September 2, 2022, at 1:00 PM, in Oakhurst Cemetery, Whitehall, Michigan.
