IN LOVING MEMORY OF
George Richard
"Dick" Howell
February 14, 1942 – October 8, 2017
George Richard "Dick" Howell
George was born on February 14, 1942 in North Bay, Ontario, Canada. He was the adopted son of The Reverend Leslie and Lucy Howell. "Dick" graduated from Montague High School class of "59" and from Purdue University with an Engineering Degree. He was also a decorated veteran after serving in the United States Army.
During his career, George worked as a contractor, consultant, small business owner, and an engineer with numerous engineering companies, including General Motors and Daimler Benz. He retired in 2007.
Dick lived out his call to God by serving on several church vestries and supporting local missions, including Family Promise and the church's free meals program. As an active member of St Peter's by the Lake Episcopal Church, he served as acolyte, reader and Lay Preacher.
Survivors include his wife J. Rona Howell, three children: Aaron (Sarah) Howell of Toledo, Ohio: Julie (Doug) Podgorski of Clinton Township, Michigan, and James Dye of Waterford, Michigan. Dick had six grandchildren: Nathan, Joshua and Elanor Podgorski, and Evan, Chloe and Ashley Howell. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Jim, and a daughter, Katrina.
His six grandchildren were the joy of Dick's life. When he was with them he was a kid again, having nerf gun wars, canoe trips and many other adventures.
He found it very rewarding to be a mentor to several young engineers throughout his career. He was an avid collector and restorer of Cub Cadet tractors and model trains. Both George and Rona enjoyed extensive travel throughout Europe and Asia.
The Memorial Service for Mr. Howell will be held Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 1:00 PM at St. Peter's by the Lake Episcopal Church with Fr. David Meyers presiding.
