Mr. Gerard K. "Jerry" O'Meara, age 89 of Hart, passed away Friday, February 23, 2018 surrounded by loving family. Jerry was born in Detroit on May 13, 1928 to James and Nora (Hopkins) O'Meara. He married the former Betty Mortiere in Detroit on July 10, 1948 and she preceded him in death on June 9, 2009.
Jerry served his country in the US Army from January 1952 and was honorably discharged in January 1954. He was employed in Sales, with the Sanders Candy Company in Detroit and also Golden Valley Dairy, until his retirement in 1986. After moving from Detroit to Hart, Jerry became a funeral home associate with the Tate Funeral Home and the King Funeral Home for many years, until retiring in 2011.
He was very active in his parish, St. Gregory Catholic Church, volunteering in many capacities at church and with the Bread of Life Food Pantry. Jerry was an avid card player and had taught his grandchildren the game, often going down in defeat at the hand of his granddaughter Sarah. He loved and enjoyed square dancing with the Melody Mates each week. Jerry was a man of devout Catholic faith, who loved his children and grandchildren very much.
Jerry is survived by one daughter, Sheila (Frank Stauber) Miller of Lake Orion, MI and one son, Kelly (Lynn) O'Meara of Pleasant Ridge, MI; four grandchildren, Andrew Miller, Conor O'Meara, Caitrin O'Meara, Sarah Miller; two sisters, Noreen Loper of Livonia, MI, Patricia (Adam) Kowalski of Phoenix, AZ; one brother, Thomas (Judy) O'Meara of Northville, MI; three sisters in law, Irene O'Meara of Harrow, Ontatio, Geraldine O'Meara of Avondale, AZ, Jean Ailshie of Palm Coast, FL; several nieces and nephews. Jerry is also survived by his significant companion, Jane Thocher.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Betty O'Meara; five brothers, Daniel, Eddie, Donald, Norbert, James O'Meara; one sister, Virginia Sellman.
The Mass of the Resurrection for Jerry will be offered Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at 1:00 pm from St. Gregory Catholic Church, 316 S. Peach St., Hart, with Fr. Thomas Bolster presiding. Visitation will be Monday from 2-8 pm at Beacon Cremation and Funeral Service, the King-Hart Chapel and Tuesday, one hour prior to the Mass at church. Interment will be in the Mears Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Bread of Life Food Pantry, 316 S. Peach St., Hart, MI 49420.
Beacon Cremation and Funeral Service, the King-Hart Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
