Obituary

Harry Michael Szostakowski, 69, of Mesick, died Thursday, May 25, 2023, at Munson Medical Center, in Traverse City, surrounded by his four daughters.  He was born May 21, 1954, in South Chicago, Illinois, the son of Harry Joseph and Dorothy (Borucki) Szostakowski.

Harry attended Saint Peter & Paul Elementary School and Fenger Middle School.  When he was 15, his father moved the family to Interlochen to build the Lost Lake Motel.  Harry graduated from Saint Francis High School, in Traverse City, in 1972.

Harry worked in the construction and ironwork industries, building two homes for his family, building the Grand Traverse Resort from beginning to end, constructing Cobo Hall in Detroit, and working on many high rises in the 5-state area.  He was an avid deer hunter and could always be found in the woods or telling deer stories.

Harry shared the last 12 years with MariLynn who survives him.  He is also survived by: his former wife of 17 years Darlene Giacherio with whom he shared four daughters, Tammy (Donald) LaFaive of Traverse City, Cynthia Ockert of Kingsley, Lisa (Ryan Hirose) Szostakowski of Orange, Massachusetts, and Robin Szostakowski of Denver, Colorado; seven grandchildren, Chloe (Brendan) Thompson, Allie Howard, Lily & Andrew LaFaive, Reece, Gabriel & Nolan Ockert; three great-grandchildren, Daniel & Samuel Thompson and June Kennedy; siblings, Diane Robinson, Kenny (Kay) Szostakowski, and Rosemary (Bob) Mcneil; and his faithful puppy partner who will miss him dearly, Gunner.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, Covell-Kingsley Chapel.  Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery in Interlochen.  Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM, Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at the funeral home.
