Irving was born November 13, 1922, to the late Henry and Mildred Prescott of Chicago, Illinois. Irving grew up in the Chicago area where he developed his love for music and his bass-baritone voice, performing with the choir of St. Mary's Church in Chicago as well as a soloist at the Chicago Temple.

Irving enlisted in the United States Army Air Force in 1943. He rose to the rank of staff sergeant and served as a gunnery officer aboard a B-29 Superfortress. He served in the South Pacific Theatre until his discharge in Feb 1946.

Irving graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill in 1949 with a degree in Music Education. He also earned a Masters Degree from Central Michigan University in 1970. He began his career with the Ludington Area School district in 1950 as served as a music teacher and administrator until his retirement in 1979.

On June 11, 1951, Irving married Alyce Lou Benedict. Alyce was a very talented piano player and often accompanied Irving when he sang or conducted musical performances.

Irving and Alyce spent forty summers at the Bay View Association in northern Michigan where Irving performed as the bass baritone for the Bay View Conservatory of Music.

Irving is survived by three children, Jack (and Ann) Prescott, of Big Rapids, Mi., Paul (and Brenda) Prescott, of Grand Haven, Mi., and Susan (and Ted) Reahm, of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, eight grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. Irving is also survived by a very special friend and Scrabble partner, Dr. Robert Overholt, who regularly visited Irving, and provided many hours of fine companionship.
