In Loving Memory of Jim Conkle
James “Jim” Conkle, Age 74, passed away on Wednesday October 14th in his home in Pentwater, MI surrounded by his loving family.
Born September 1st, 1952 to Mabel and Wilford “June” Conkle, Jim was the eldest of six children. He graduated from Walkerville High School in 1970. In 1986 he received his Tradesman License and worked for Great Lakes Energy for nearly 30 years before retiring in 2014.
Though he had no biological children, he was a loving step-father to his late wife Jean’s children, and considered their grandchildren his greatest joy. Jim and Jean could always be found on the golf course, or spending time with family. Jean said that Jim was her soulmate and their joy and love was apparent to all who met them. After Jean’s tragic passing to cancer 1996, he remained close to her family and continued to be the best Papa to their grandkids.
Years later, he married Beth Thommen and he was blessed to share in the joy of her family as well. Jim and Beth made memories across the world, travelling to Mexico, Jamaica, and various states across the US, while always making time for their loved ones. Beth also tragically passed to cancer in 2012, and he did not remarry.
Jim was a man who always preferred to be on the go. He enjoyed hunting, bowling, cooking, roadtrips, football, and his favorite pastime golfing. For many years he took his grandkids on annual vacations, went golfing in various states across the US, and spent his winters in the American Southwest after retirement where he spent time with friends and was always happy to have his family visit.
He leaves behind a legacy of wonderful memories, laughter, and joy. His family and friends will miss his dry humor, infectious laughter, and fantastic cooking.
He is survived by his brother Denny (Gail) Conkle, step-children Melissa (Roger) Wiegand and Jim (Tonya) Curtis, and his grandchildren Ashleigh Wiegand, Andrew (Gabby) Wiegand, Noah (Sasha) Curtis, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family..
He is preceded in death by his mother Mabel Conkle, his father Wilford “June” Conkle, his siblings Kathy, Sue, Jeff, and Larry, as well as his wife Beth Conkle, and his wife Barbara Jean Conkle.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday October 24th, 2026 at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Hall on Oceana Drive in Hart, MI at 2:00 pm.
Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, Pere Marquette Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
