James "Jim" William Maine, 81, of Traverse City, formerly of Lansing and Ellsworth, passed away March 10, 2020, with loved ones by his side, in Mears (Silver Lake).
Jim was born July 1, 1938, in Mason, to Orla and Ilah (McCarrick) Maine. When he was a young boy, he moved to St. Helen and graduated in 1956 from Gerrish-Higgins School District in Roscommon. After graduation he joined and served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1962 where he became skilled in electronics. After leaving the service he worked and lived in New Jersey for a few years before moving his family to Michigan to start working at Michigan State University, in the Biochemistry Department, doing research equipment repair for 25 years. Jim then retired and moved to Ellsworth to start a new business "Maine Woodworks" where he made beautiful Shaker style furniture and other custom woodworks.
Jim will be remembered for being a kind man, great father, and always willing to help others. He enjoyed many outdoor activities though his life, especially camping, fishing, cross country skiing and canoeing or just an afternoon ride in the car to enjoy the scenery. He always enjoyed walks in the woods, especially with his canine companions Max and Andy. Each winter Jim looked forward to his weekend at "Camp Baldy" with his grandson Jimmy. He also enjoyed new electronic gadgets especially computers and tablets, always getting the newest model to play with, and flying radio-controlled planes.
Jim is survived by: his daughters, Debra (Mark) Borst of Mears, and Vicki Prueter of Mesa, AZ; grandchildren, Jim Vainner, Alexandra Prueter, and Amy (Mike) Hufford; along with great grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by: his parents, Orla and Ilah; brother, Robert Maine; and son, James "Jimmy" William Maine Jr.
Following his wishes, cremation has taken place and a graveside service will be held at a later date, at Maple Grove Cemetery, in Mason.
