James Howard Monroe, 97, of New Era, formerly of Lansing, died Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at Lakeshore Hospital in Shelby. He was born August 4, 1920, in Lansing, the son of Howard and Allie (McManamon) Monroe.
Jim was a Veteran of World War II serving in the US Army Air Force.
Jim graduated from Eastern High School, in Lansing, in 1939. He was self-employed for many years and also worked as a dispatcher for Ingham Medical Hospital. In his spare time, Jim enjoyed dancing, playing the accordion and piano, and traveling. He was a member of the Peoples Church in East Lansing.
Jim is survived by: his daughter, Carol Johnson of New Era; 3 grandchildren, Karen Johnson of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Steven Johnson of New Era, and David Johnson of Cadillac; 4 great-grandchildren, Sarah Allen of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Emily Johnson of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Leah Johnson of Cadillac and Emma Johnson of Cadillac; and 4 nieces, Mary Stormant of St. Petersburg, Florida, Trina McAvoy of St. Petersburg, Florida, Virginia McAvoy of Lansing, and Josie McAvoy of Lansing.
Jim was preceded in death by: his wife, Ruth Ellen Monroe in 2015. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Helen McAvoy; and his brother, Joseph Monroe.
Cremation has taken place and no services will be held at this time.
Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, King-Hart Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
