Obituary

James Dale Schramm, 80, of Pentwater, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2022, at home, surrounded by his wife and two daughters.

He was born on August 18, 1941, in Hart, the son of Frank and Florence (Morse) Schramm.

Jim and Dorothy (Honeck) married on October 14, 1993, and enjoyed 29 argument-free years together.

After graduating from Hart High School, Jim went on to earn a B.A. in political science from Michigan State University and an M.A. in political science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Jim then proudly served our country as an officer in the United States Army. After 21 years of service, including the Vietnam War, he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

During his final years in the military, Jim attended law school, graduating from Cooley Law School with a Juris Doctor (JD) degree. Jim then worked in corporate law before becoming an advocate for the protection of the rivers of Michigan. He also served as director and legal counsel for Fly Fishers International for over 30 years.

Jim, foremost, loved his family. He enjoyed coffee, prime rib and anything noodles. He read 3 daily newspapers cover to cover and was the stalwart guardian of the remote controls. If he was not over the top of his waders, selflessly assisting environmental organizations with legal issues, he could be found at the Oceana Golf Club with his brothers, Frank and Norton and his nephew, Michael Schramm and friends.

Jim is survived by: his wife, Dorothy; her children, Michelle (Steven) Kubesh and Konrad (Jenny) Bergmann; his first wife, Pamela Bristol; their children, Heidi (Michael) Schramm and Sarah Cherry (Schramm); grandchildren, Alexander Cherry, Tucker Cherry, Brandon Kubesh and Dereck Kubesh; brothers Frank (Pat) Schramm and Norton (Linda) Schramm; sister, Mary (Scott) Wright; and many cousins, nephews and nieces.

Jim was preceded in death by: his parents, Frank Schramm and Florence (Morse) Schramm.

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Anglers of the Au Sable, P.O. Box 200, Grayling, MI 49738, ausableanglers.org.
