Obituary

James "Jim" Leonard Sommerman, 96, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at Boardman Lake Glens Brigadoon in Traverse City.  He was born July 21, 1927, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, the son of George and Lauretta (McKenney) Sommerman.

Jim was a proud WWII Veteran, serving in the United States Navy as a Corpsman.  Jim remained a Navy man his entire life, and he loved being on the water, whether boating or fishing.

Jim graduated from the University of Windsor School of Business.  He worked briefly for Cadillac before going to work for Ford in 1953.  He retired in 1983 as a Financial Controller.

Jim loved to hunt, a hobby he enjoyed well into his later years.  He was a member of both the Kingsley and Walton Junction Sportsman's Clubs; he loved to go to the range and shoot.  Jim was also a member of the Twin Bay British Car Club (TBBCC). Jim also enjoyed a good nap, something he seemed to be able to do anywhere.  More than anything, Jim loved spending time with his family.  He lived a long, full, and good life with them.

On May 22, 1954, in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, Jim married Frances Pearl Wood who survives him.  He is also survived by: his son, Mark (Marta) Sommerman of Traverse City; grandchildren, James (Jenny), Katie, and Michael, and James; great-grandchildren, Mason and Mila; and daughter-in-law, Shelly Sommerman.

Jim was preceded in death by: his parents; and son, Eric Sommerman.

Services will be held by Jim's family at a later date.

Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, Covell-Traverse City Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
