Mrs. Jean M Parker, age 79, of Pentwater, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2012. She was born April 9, 1932, in Fremont to J.Wilfred and Vada (Patterson) Ferguson. She earned her Bachelor's Degree in Library Science and worked as a librarian at Muskegon High School, Walkerville Public Schools, North Muskegon Public Library, Pentwater Township Library and Mercy Hospital Medical Library. She retired from Pentwater Township Library on March 1, 1996. She married Carl B. Parker on October 21, 1951 in Haven, Kansas. Mrs. Parker was very active in the community as a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, the Pentwater Women's Club, Pentwater Book and Wine Appreciation Club, Friday Morning Breakfast Club, Fellowship Center Exercise Group, and Weight Watchers. She was a member of the American Library Association, Sisters of Mercy Library Association, and State of Michigan Library Association. She was previously active in Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and 4-H Clubs and with her family was involved with the Harbor Unitarian Universalist Congregation. She earned her degree (and maintained a 4.0 average) while raising her six children and working. She had a keen mind. She raised her children to love jazz and to honor creativity, hard work, and clear thinking. Her comfortable home was a testament to her ingenuity with materials at hand and her homemaking skills. Jean is survived by four daughters, Mary Elizabeth (Michael Dana) Parker of Greensboro, NC; Kristi Lee (James) Mickam of Syracuse, NY; Holly Suzanne (James) Buys-Schaub of Muskegon; and Jayne Louise (Chris) Anderson of Hart; two sons, Thomas Ferguson Parker of Whitehall, and Jonathan Carl Parker of Muskegon; nine grandchildren, September Buys, Scott Johnson, Carl Johnson, Mandy Johnson, Michael Anderson, Erin Mickam, Kyle Mickam, Naomi Parker, and Lilah Parker; six great grandchildren, Morgan, Allie, and Sierra Johnson; Sean and Abigail Brennan; and Lennie Elizabeth Reckner; one sister, Mary (Leonard) Kilian of Scotia, NY; and one brother, Charles (Thelma) Ferguson of Holland. Her long-time companion, Donald L Schalk, of Pentwater also survives. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl B Parker; sister; Patricia Parslow; her son-in-law, Leonard Buys II; her grandson, Leonard Buys III; and her daughter-in-law, Perri Ann Parker. A Memorial Service for Mrs. Parker will be held Monday, March 12, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church in Pentwater with Rev. Harris Hoekwater officiating. Interment will be in Restlawn Cemetery in Muskegon. The family requests that any memorials be directed to Pentwater Township Library.
