Jessie "Sue" Marie Gillan, 101, of Ludington, formerly of Montague, died Sunday, December 2, 2018, at Ludington Woods Living Center. She was born August 26, 1917, the daughter of John and Elsie (Schoenherr) Westphal. She grew up and attended school in Detroit, Michigan. During World War II she worked in the Chrysler automobile factory making tanks for the war effort. She married Charles Johnson and they moved to Amber Township and joined his father in dairy farming and growing hay and grain on many acres of land on Dennis Road. While farming, she also worked 15 years for the Star Watch Case factory in Ludington.
On December 17, 1966, Sue married H. William Gillan and moved to Montague, Michigan helping to raise Bill's children. Bill was co-owner of Hunts Sales and Service in Montague. Bill and Sue travelled to many places in the United States for his work. After retirement they many spent winter months each year in Port Isabelle, Texas. Sue volunteered for 20 years at Hackley Hospital in Muskegon.
Sue moved to Ludington Woods Assisted Living Center in October of this year.
Sue is survived by: daughters, Kathryn Petersen of Ludington, Gaye Block of Kalamazoo, and Joye Mitchell of Reno, NV; sons, Glen Gillan of Montague, and Gary (Karyn) Gillan of Grand Haven; granddaughters, Wendy (Kevin) Healy, Polly (Tim) Myer, Michelle Thompson, Chandra Gillan, Barb (John) Stephens, Jamie (Jeff Craddock) Block, Tina (Rodney) Zellamn, and Teyra Gillan; grandsons, Jamy (Michelle) Gillan, Chancy Gillan, Urial (Montana) Mitchell and Uriah (Lindsay Frankfurt) Mitchell; 13 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Sue was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, Bill Gillan; son, John Johnson; son-in-law, George Petersen, Jr.; and grandson, George Petersen, III.
Sue has donated her body to Michigan State University. A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church of Montague on Saturday, December 8, 2018, at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Muskegon Humane Society, 2640 Marquette Ave., Muskegon, MI 49442 or White Lake Area Sportfishing Association, Box 157, Montague, MI 49437.
Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, Pere Marquette Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
