John T. "Jack" Bonser age 94, of Ludington, passed away on December 2, 2015. He was born on July 2, 1921 in London, Ontario, Canada, son of Walter and Beatrice (Curnoe) Bonser.
Jack moved with his family in 1933 to Detroit where his father worked as a Meat Department Manager who later transferred to Ludington. Jack served in the U.S. Army in the 99th Infantry Division from 1942-1945. He fought in the Battle of the Buldge, Remagan Bridge, and several other battles. Upon his return he worked with his father and later purchased two supermarkets which he operated until his retirement in 1991. He served as President of both the Ludington Optimist Club and the Ludington Chamber Commerce, was the 1971 United Way Chairman, the 1979 Ludington Citizen of the year and served a 4 year term on the Ludington School Board. Jack was a very active member of the Ludington Optimist Club, the Eagles, Elks, Lincoln Hills Golf Club, Ludington JC's, the Custer Gold Bar VFW Post and the Ludington American Legion Post 76. He also served for 25 years on the Board of Directors for Viking Foods Wholesale Grocery CO-OP. Jack loved dancing at the Custer VFW Gold Bar Post to the Kats and Jammers with his wife Sharon, playing racquetball, golfing and traveling. Jack had many boats and enjoyed fishing Lake Michigan for salmon and trout with his first mate Arlie Carrier.
He is survived by his wife Sharon, his children, Dale, Cindy and Rhonda, and four grandchildren. He is also survived by Sharon's children, Todd (Michelle) Hansen, Jonathan (Kathie) Oszust, Jonda (David) Light, Shae (La Monta) Harris, Michael and Joseph Oszust and four grandchildren. Jack is survived by his former wife, Ethyl Bonser, brothers-in-law, Robert (Joyce) Koegler and Keith (Teckla) Koegler, along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Kim, and his brother Robert.
A Memorial Service for Jack will be held at 2:00 p.m. at St. Johns Lutheran Church, 209 N. Rowe Street, Ludington, MI 49431 on Saturday, December 19, 2015 with Reverend Thomas Boehne officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family for the purchase of a headstone.
