John Michael "Mike" Henderson, 74, of Mears, passed away July 4 2019, in his home. He was born November 16, 1944, in Sault Ste. Marie, the son of Bernard and Florence Henderson.

Mike graduated from Pickford High School with the class of 1962. He worked on the family farm until he entered the U.S. Army at the age of 18. He trained in boot camp at Fort Knox, Kentucky, followed by advanced training in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Hawaii, and Okinawa. After serving his country, he returned to the Soo. Mike then moved to Grand Rapids to work for Stahl Buick for five years. He worked for UPS as a mechanic for 30 years until his retirement. After retirement, Mike and Hazel moved to Upper Silver Lake where they built their current home.

Mike was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved fishing with his family and nephew, Jason.

Mike constructed buildings for a hobby after he retired, including a storage building at his church. He served three terms on his church board and also on the Township Board of Appeals and the Lake Association Board until recently.

Mike and Hazel were married March 31, 1979 and recently celebrated their 40 ^th anniversary.

Mike is survived by: his loving wife, Hazel; children, Gail (Don) Hutchinson, Steve Morrison, John Henderson (friend Meg Miller), and Debra (AJ) Dunning, all of Lowell; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Iris (John) Lehigh of Sault Ste. Marie and Florida, Lois (Bruce) Willard of Kent, Washington, Loretta (Everett) Lines of Sault Ste. Marie; brother, Patrick Henderson of Luzerne; step-sister, Virginia Splan (Bill) Lockhart of Sault Ste. Marie; brothers-in-law, Bill (Eileen) VanderVlucht of Lucas, and Garry (Pat) VanderVlucht of Mears; as well as several nieces, nephews, and good friends.

Mike was preceded in death by: his parents, Bernard and Florence Henderson; daughter, Brenda Morrison-Kernen; sister, Corrine; a baby brother; brother,  Jim Henderson; step-mother, Margaret Splan Henderson; and sister-in-law, Barbara Henderson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, July 10, 2019, at Cornerstone Community Church, 7640 W. Taylor Road, Mears, MI 49436. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 7:00PM, Tuesday July 9, 2019, at Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, King-Hart Chapel, 2370 N. 72 Ave., Hart, MI 49420, and Wednesday from 10:00 AM until time of service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Up and Out Ministries or Great Lakes Caring (hospice).
