John Frederick Huizing, age 86, of Hart, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2026, with his wife and family by his side. He was the loving husband of Maureen Miller Huizing; son of Gladys and John Huizing; and brother to Susan Wiedman and Mary Fosburg.
John was born on April 28, 1940, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He spent his summers growing up at Silver Lake and attending Mears United Methodist Church. After graduating from Central High School in Grand Rapids, he joined the United States Army and served in Alaska during the time it became a state. While in service, he worked on large diesel generators for the Cold Weather and Mountain School, supplying electricity to the camp.
John later built a home in Silver Lake, where he raised his family. He became an active member of the Methodist Church in Hart, where he and Maureen eventually built their home after their children were grown.
He was a devoted member of the Oceana Eagles and the American Legion for over 50 years. John worked in water conditioning before beginning a long career with the United States Postal Service as a rural carrier until his retirement. He was active in the Rural Carriers Union and continued to serve up until the time of his passing.
John’s faith and service were central to his life. He began teaching an adult Bible discussion class at the invitation of Rev. Jack Kraklan, working through all the Gospels. This led to deep involvement in the Hart United Methodist Church, where he served on numerous committees. He, along with other members of the church, were instrumental in establishing the church’s media booth, coordinating improvements such as relocating lighting controls and installing sound equipment. His work continues to serve the congregation today.
He also helped expand church connectivity by bringing phone and video lines to the sanctuary, basement, and kitchen. John completed a two-year discipleship course from Harvey Prochnau, participated in Lay Speaker classes for many years, attended an Emmaus Walk, and served on the Emmaus board.
Beyond his church, John served with Joni Erickson Tada handicap camps, co-founded the Christmas Shoebox Ministry in Oceana County with Judy Prochnau, and started the Thanksgiving meal outreach at Hart Methodist, leading it for four years. He also organized monthly volunteer groups to serve meals at the Muskegon Rescue Mission.
John served as president of the Methodist Men for over ten years and was treasurer of the West Michigan Conference Men. After conference consolidation, he became Vice President of the United Men in the Michigan Conference. He also served on the disability committee for over a decade, including several years as its leader.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Gladys Huizing, and his brothers-in-law, Rex Wiedman and Gerald B. Miller (Linda).
He is survived by: his loving wife, Maureen; his children, Sheryl Lynn (Mike) Benson, Monica (Jim) Field, Sheila (Rick) Burrell, and Kevin (Rhonda) Standfuss; and his beloved grandchildren, Tabitha, Kevin Drew, Andrew, Alexandria, Kenneth, Jennie, Keegan, Abigail, along with several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He is also survived by: his sisters, Susan Wiedman and Mary (Ray) Fosburg; brothers-in-law Joe (Pearl) Miller and David (Debra) Miller; and many close cousins and friends.
Memorial services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Monday, June 8, 2026, at Hart United Methodist Church, 308 South State Street, Hart, MI 49420, with a luncheon to follow. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until time of services at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hart United Methodist Church.
