Obituary

Mr. John Frederick Nienhuis, age 90, of Hart, joined his Savior Jesus Christ, on Monday, February 20, 2017. He was born March 21, 1926, in Holland to Henry and Eva (Walters) Nienhuis. He married the love of his life, Dorothy Weyenberg, in Holland on June 21, 1949.

As a young man, John served his country in the Navy during World War II. For many years, John owned the Napa Auto Parts stores in Hart and Shelby. After his retirement, John enjoyed serving others through the American Red Cross and World Renew Disaster Relief Services of the Christian Reformed Church.

John was a man of grace, faith, family and integrity; a devoted husband to his wife, a loving father to their three sons and a great friend to many. John and Dorothy began their married life in South Haven, MI, where they developed many lifelong friendships and where John was a very involved in the Hope Reformed Church serving as a deacon, elder and choir member. After moving to Hart, John was an active member of the New Era Christian Reformed Church, where he was an elder and sang in the choir. He will be remembered by the family for the wonderful vacations he saved for and looked forward to every year. He enjoyed fishing and baking breads of many kinds. John and his son David were daily visitors at the Corner Bakery, enjoying conversations with everyone they met. In his later years, John and David were constant companions and enjoyed watching television sports together.

John is survived by his wife: Dorothy Nienhuis of Hart; three sons: John Jr. (Jerry) Nienhuis of Comstock Park, MI, David (Karen) Nienhuis of Hart and Bob (Jeanne) Nienhuis of Grand Rapids, MI; one brother: Dale (Chris) Nienhuis of Holland, MI; daughter-in-law, Jean (Barry) Palmerton of Fremont, MI. He dearly loved his nine grandchildren, Aaron (Joy) Nienhuis, Corrie (Mike) Bakker, Mary (John) Love, Mark Nienhuis, Michael (Lee) Nienhuis, Gary (Charity) Nienhuis, Jacob (Miriam) Nienhuis, Paul (Kristin) Nienhuis, Adam (Michele) Nienhuis. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Norma Nienhuis (Gordon) and Joyce Nienhuis (LaVerne). He took great delight in his nineteen great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Henry Nienhuis and Eva Walters Nienhuis, three brothers, Gordon Nienhuis, LaVerne Nienhuis, Roger Nienhuis, and two sisters, Ethel Brinks and Beverly Schaafsma.

The funeral service for Mr. Nienhuis will be held Saturday, February 25, 2017, at 11:00 am at New Era Christian Reformed Church in New Era, MI with the Rev. Greg Dyk officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 6-8 p.m. at King Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Hart. Interment will be in the Hart Cemetery.
