Jon Christopher "Chris" Looney, 74 of Elk Rapids, Michigan, passed peacefully on March 25, 2023.  Chris was born on February 25, 1949, to Foster & Betty (Boucher) Looney in Fort Worth, Texas.

He graduated from Waukegan Township High School in Illinois and attended Michigan State University where he earned undergraduate and graduate degrees.  Chris married Christie Ann Lozen on June 25, 1977, in Port Huron, Michigan.

Chris worked as a grad-assistant and English instructor at MSU and worked primarily at Saginaw Valley State University for 35 years where he served as an Academic Advisor, Coordinator of Basic Skills in English, the Registrar, Director of Academic & Student Support Services, & the Director of Institutional Research.

Chris loved to watch sports, especially MSU & SVSU athletics, his son's and granddaughters' activities, golf, jazz, reading, completing NY Times crossword puzzles & boating on "Loon's Toon" on Elk Lake.

Chris & Christie were "snowbirds" in Vero Beach, Florida, Marco Island, Florida, & Gulf Shores, Alabama.  He was a very devoted husband, father, Papa, and friend.  Chris had a heart of gold.

He is survived by Christie, son & daughter-in-law Patrick MacDougall Looney & Sara Martha (Felker) Looney and his precious granddaughters Addison Lee & Claire Ann Looney.  He is also survived by his Brother Patrick A. Looney and sister-in-law Rebecca (Johnson) Looney, nephews Josh (Nikki) Looney & Chad Looney; and niece Gretchen (Todd) Tuntland.

The family requests memorial contributions in Chris' name to Saginaw Valley State University Foundation ( www.svsu.edu/foundation ).

A Celebration of Life will be held later this summer.
