Obituary

Juanita Mary Campbell Nelson peacefully left this world on August 7, 2022, to move on to the next.  She was born October 18, 1923, in Ludington, the daughter of William and Stella (Organ) Campbell.

She lived a meaningful and purposeful life rooted in the community of Ludington, Michigan for more than 98 years.

She was fond of gift giving, beach views and sunsets, all things with pecans (including her favorite butter pecan ice cream from the Park Dairy, aka House of Flavors), supporting small town local businesses, and most certainly family.  She also had the best laugh that would produce the sweetest twinkle in her eye.

Juanita cared deeply about family, always wanting the best for each person, and occasionally stubbornly ensuring they got it.  She worked tirelessly to meet the needs of others even from a very young age with the birth of her baby brother, Malcolm.  She was also devoted to her sisters, Delores Valenta and Betty Layton, as well as her aunts and uncles. She was deeply religious, faithfully praying for others and the world, believing that was the best way to truly care for others.

She gave everything her all, including her marriage to Robert H. Nelson and the two businesses they grew together, Robert H. Nelson Construction and Nelson Packaging Company.  They raised a beautiful, caring, and brilliant daughter, Roberta, whom Juanita was incredibly proud of and close to.

Juanita was fiercely loyal, always generous, and was always a champion of the underdog.  Her fiery spirit was something her granddaughter always loved and appreciated, and certainly learned from.  She contributed to many causes in her lifetime, including Ludington Area Catholic School, St. Simon Catholic Church, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society.

Those who will continue to keep her memory alive and hold her dear in their hearts include her daughter, Roberta (Mike) Wibalda; her granddaughter, Nancy (Keegan) Behm; her great- grandson, Ephraim; her niece, Donita (Bill) Kelly; among many others blessed to know her.  She will be greatly missed.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ludington Area Catholic School Tuition Angels or St. Simon Catholic Church.

Funeral Rites will be celebrated at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at St. Simon Catholic Church, with Father Wayne B. Wheeler presiding.  Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery.  Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, from 10:00 AM until time of Funeral Rites.

Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, Pere Marquette Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
