Obituary

Surrounded by her family, Karen Gale Culp, 87, died peacefully in Traverse City on January 31, 2024. Karen is remembered as a loving wife to her husband of 69 years, Ron Culp, and a devoted mother to her four children. Karen wanted to be remembered as someone who was always seeking new horizons and passions.  She loved sharing with her family and friends.  Karen believed that life was a joy and mystery unfolding.

One of three girls, Karen and her sisters were "military brats," having lived in several U.S cities and later, in Heidelberg, Germany.  Karen graduated high school from Richmond Academy in Augusta GA. In 1954, Karen and Ron, an Army officer, were married in Augusta, where Ron was stationed. Seeking a family-centered, mid-western way of life with plenty of options for recreation, the young couple ultimately settled in Traverse City, MI.  Karen's family and her home were central to her as a young wife and mother, whether she was cheering for her children at sporting events, encouraging Ron while he pursued a private therapy practice, or coaching young mothers in the La Leche League.

After raising her family, Karen returned to higher education and was pinned as a Registered Nurse upon her graduation from Northwestern Michigan College in 1983.  She will long be remembered within the Munson Medical Center community as a rehabilitation nurse, serving their mission for 25 years.  A knowledgeable devotee of classical music, Karen was also an active volunteer at Interlochen Center for the Arts, as well as a faithful member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation.

Karen enjoyed sailing with her husband Ron, riding her beloved horse Paladin, sewing and quilting, playing a good game of cribbage, and frequently hosted family events with style.  She was an avid participant of yoga, skiing, hiking, and gardening.  Karen had a special gift and ability to unconditionally accept and welcome people she met. She deeply affected her community, that included her church, anyone who came into her home, and particularly her children's friends and caregivers at the end of her life.   She was an altogether kind and loving human being.  After retirement, she and Ron enjoyed travel, and creating lasting memories with their children and grandchildren.

Karen is preceded in death by her parents Noel and Louise Henke and her sister Ann. She is survived by her husband Ron, sister MaryLou (Ken Dayton) and four children: Diane Pattridge (Sam), David Culp, Deborah Menchaca (Sam) and Daniel Culp (Janelle); eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A memorial service will take place in July with a date to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, consider honoring Karen's hallmark kind-heartedness with a donation to Hospice of Michigan, Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, or Interlochen Public Radio.

Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, Covell-Traverse City Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
