Laura May Sobode, age 67, of Michigan passed away peacefully on August 8, 2026 surrounded by her family.

Born on February 19, 1959, in Hart, Michigan. Laura was raised in Fruitport, Michigan and later made her home in Texas.

She was warm and kind soul whose presence left the lasting impact on all who knew her.

Laura was a beloved wife to Prince Sobode; a devoted mother to Tara Shafer, Renee Hill, Brent Dell Shafer, Jamie Wallace Jenkins and Antonio Jenkins (son-in-law); and a loving stepmother to Debola Sabode and James Nevitt.

She was a cherished grandmother to Sabrina Juarez, Brent Wayne, Shafer Kenya Rhines, Kayla Rhines, Kyden Rhines, Rayne Donahue, Skylar Donahue, Tarrell Mullins and Leeland Shafer.

A proud great-grandmother to Rayvontae, Grace, Lauren, Josiah, EJ, Jaden, Rose, Leah and Janae.

Laura is also survived by her mother, Sharlene (Elwell) Shafer; her father, Richard Shafer; and her sisters, Kim Lathrop, Shelly Pitcher and Linda Longmire.

She was the heart of her family in a source of strength and love to many. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren whom she adored and treasured. As a mother Laura was selfless and nurturing always placing her children first and installing in them the values of hard work, compassion and integrity. As a friend she was loyal and generous, always willing to help those she cared about.

Her laughter was infectious, her heart was open, and she made everyone feel valued and loved.

Laura was preceded in death by: her beloved son, Brent Dell Shafer; and her great-grandchild Janae; both of whom she held close in her heart and now is reunited with.

While her absence leaves a deep void, her love guidance and memories will continue to live on in those she touched.

Laura’s Legacy of Love, Strength and Devotion to family will endure through generations. She will be deeply missed, forever loved and never forgotten.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM, Monday, August 17, 2026, at Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, King-Hart Chapel, with Father Wayne B. Wheeler officiating. Visitation will be held Monday from 12:00 PM until time of services at the funeral home. Graveside services will begin at 3:00 PM, Monday at Mt. Ulysses Cemetery in Crystal Township.
