Obituary

Mr. Leon Jay Smith, age 69, of Hart, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2015. He was born August 13, 1946, in Lansing to Robert and Cozie (Ackerman) Smith. He graduated from high school and attended one year of college. On June 14, 1980, Leon married Emily Battice in Hart; they were married for thirty-five years. Leon was employed at Hallack Contracting as an auto mechanic and crusher operator until his retirement in 2008. He enjoyed sports, deer hunting and operated Baseline Road Sports Complex aka Smith Fields.

Leon is survived by his wife: Emily Smith, two sons, Randolph L. (Kathy) Smith of Hart, Rusty (Anita Villaneuva) Smith of Hart; three daughters, Rhonda (Roger) Shalifoe of New Era, Michelle (Jason) Bialik of Manistee, Tasha M. Smith of Comstock Park; thirteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Renee L. Lewis of OK; three brothers, Lanny L. Smith of FL, Aaron L. (Laurie) Smith of TX, Kevin Ray (Karolyn) Smith of Farwell; many nieces and nephews; aunt, Arlene Shaw of Ionia; two brothers-in-law, Clarence (Connie) Battice of Lake Odessa, Phillip (Pam) Battice of Shelby; six sisters-in-law, Helen Scripter of Mt. Morris, Ponce (Chuck) Zamborowski of Hart, Mary Meza of Hart, Roma Battice of Hart, Gail Melendrez of Hereford, TX, and Alice Battice of Hart. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jan E. Smith Sr.

The Funeral Service for Mr. Smith will be Thursday, October 15, 2015, at 1:00 pm at King Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Hart with Rev. Kevin Smith officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph Indian Cemetery in Elbridge. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at King Funeral Home. The family requests that any memorials be directed to St. Joseph Chapel Tekakwitha Center, c/o Emily Smith, 1465 E. Baseline Rd., Hart, MI 49420.
