Mrs. Lilah L. Payne, age 90, died Tuesday, June 26, 2007. She was born April 29, 1917 in Leavitt Township, Oceana County, Michigan. She was the fourth child of John Franklin and Valeda Rose (Rumsey) Smith. The family later moved to Elbridge Township, Oceana County. She attended May School. On November 28, 1934, she married Max Payne of Elbridge Township. Together they raised five children. Lilah is survived by 2 daughters, Charlotte Rose (Theo) Hammontree of Augusta, GA and Marilyn Kay (Richard) Witham of North Muskegon; 3 sons, Gary Ronald (Marcia) Payne of Twin Lake, Alan Dale (Paulette) Payne of Muskegon and John Warren (Susan) Payne of Muskegon. Also 18 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Verna D. Strait of North Muskegon and Thelma L. (Vaughn) Conroy of Muskegon and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Preceding her in death was her husband Max, her parents, 2 brothers, Carl O. Smith and Cecil M. Smith, and 2 sisters, M. Corabelle Bouzis and I. Charleen Mysen. The Funeral Service will be held Monday, July 2, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. from the Eldbridge Community Church with Pastor Jonathan Rager officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband of 59 years in Elbridge Township Cemetery. Friends may meet the family Sunday 6-8 P.M. at the Tate-King Funeral Home.
