Obituary

Lorraine Weng Shafer, NB, of Pentwater died March 27, 2008. She is survived by her sister Lois Weng Morris of Pentwater, her sister in law, Joyce Weng of Phoenix, AZ; her nieces, Laurie Weng of Gilbert, AZ, Sally Morris of Holland, MI, Jean Morris of Pentwater, Judy Morris of Sacramento, CA; her nephews, Bruce Weng and his wife Leslie of Tucson, AZ, Brian Larson of Las Vegas, NV; her grand-niece, Shannon Larson of Las Vegas, NV; her special friends, Dan and Peggy Quijas of Ludington. She was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Ranghild Weng of Daggett, MI, her brother, Roger Weng of Phoenix, AZ and her husband Robert Shafer of Marcellus, NY. Lorraine's extended family and her numerous friends will all miss her capacity to care and be concerned for all those she came in contact with. She had the ability to be truly interested in whomever she met and what we had to say. Lorraine was born in the Upper Peninsula in the small town of Daggett. Very early in life it became apparent that she would become a true scholar. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Iowa with a B.S. degree. Later she continued her education with a Masters Degree also at the University of Iowa and eventually earned her Doctorate Degree. She worked for many years for the National Dairy Council in Chicago, New Jersey and New York. While living in Marcellus, NY, she was very active with Zanta, becoming their president for two years. In 1998, she returned to Michigan, settling in Ludington. Here she became active with the Mason County Literacy Program, the AAUW and the Auxiliary of Memorial Medical Center. Within the Auxiliary, she served on many committees and had recently completed her term of office as President. Along with all of her volunteer commitments, she also wrote a book about the events that led to Michigan's statehood and the Weng families settling of their little corner of the Upper Peninsula. A private interment service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be given to the Auxiliary at Memorial Medical Center, Ludington, Michigan.
