Obituary

Louis Leonard Fitz, 80, of Irons, passed away unexpectedly on August 19, 2025, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.  He was born December 26, 1944, in Lansing, the son of Charles and Tressa (Sherman) Fitz Sr.

Lou's life was lived in service to others: First to his family, but also to his country, community, and neighbors.

Lou was a proud Marine and served his country as a Sgt. E5, 105 mm artillery section chief.  He earned 4 meritorious masts, and a good conduct medal.  Following his honorable discharge, he went to work for General Motors.  He started on the line and worked his way up to Sr. Specifications Analyst, retiring after 35 years.

Upon his retirement, Lou fulfilled his lifelong dream of living Up North.  He moved to Irons and lived on the Little Manistee River where he enjoyed a life of kayaking, fishing, snowmobiling and hosting many gatherings of family and friends.  Lou was happiest when sitting around the bonfire with a large group of people after a long day of kayaking.

Lou served as Elk Township Supervisor for 12 years and served on the Sauble-Elk-Eden Township Fire Board, the Olivet Community School Board and the Olivet Athletic Boosters Board.

Family and good friends meant more than anything to Lou. He was always friendly and welcoming, leaving everyone he met with a smile. He never knew a stranger and will be remembered as a good man.  He will be profoundly missed by many.

Lou is survived by: his significant other of more than 20 years, Joyce Durdel; daughters, Deb (Dennis) Paquette of Marshall and Michelle (Steve) Vassello of Plantation Florida; grandsons, Brian Paquette and Steven (Emily) Vassello; great-grandson, Peter Vassello; and sister Mardy Williams.

Lou was preceded in death by: his parents; siblings, Maryon Fitz and Tom Fitz; and great-grandson, Luke Vassello.
