Obituary

Louise Joan Hornung, age 100, passed away peacefully at Ludington Woods on January 11, 2025.  Louise was born on January 29, 1924 in South Bend, Indiana to Louis and Frances Spychalski and lived on Warren Street in South Bend.  She studied nursing at St. Joseph School of Nursing in South Bend and graduated as a Registered Nurse.  She was also a member of the Cadet Corp.   Louise worked as a nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital where she met and fell in love with Howard Hornung, who was a student at the University of Notre Dame at the time.  They married on August 20th, 1949 in South Bend, Indiana.

Louise and Howard moved to Ludington in 1953 where Howard accepted a position as the band director of Ludington schools.  They went on to raise 5 children. After raising her children, Louise later went on to work as a nurse at Baywood Nursing Home in Ludington until retiring.

Louise was an avid supporter of the band programs and attended every concert with children in tow, sitting in the front row on most occasions.

Louise and Howard were married for 55 years prior to Howard's death in 2004.  After her husband's death she lived at Sherman Oaks apartments for 20 years until moving to Ludington Woods in October 2024.

Louise was a very devout Catholic and longtime member of St. Simon's Catholic Church.  She had a strong servant heart and faithfully served at the Adoration Chapel at St. Simon's on Saturday mornings up until October 2024.

Louise's life was devoted to her family and she loved playing board games and cards with her grandchildren.  She was caring and considerate, always thinking of others and being concerned with their welfare.  Louise would light up the room with her smile and conversation.

Louise is preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Frances Spychalski, her husband Howard, her son Jere, her grandson Gregory, brothers Ed & Casey Spychalski, sister Esther Spychalski, sister-in-law Lori Spychalski, sister-in-law Sister Jeremy, and brother-in-law Clayton Foster.

She is survived by children Paul (Marva) of Detroit, Chuck (Sue) of Holland, Tina of Salt Lake City, and Beth Johnson of Scottville.  She is also survived by her sister-in-law's Alice Ann Foster of West Monroe, New York and Betty Spychalski of South Bend, and daughter-in-law Kim Hornung of Wellesley, MA.  Louise has 12 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Ludington Woods and Alera Home Health for the compassionate care they provided Louise during her brief stay at Ludington Woods.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM, Friday, January 17, 2025, at St. Simon Catholic Church with Father Dan DePew presiding.  Interment will take place at Pere Marquette Catholic Cemetery next to her husband, Howard, in the spring.  Visitation will be held Thursday, January 16, 2025 from 4-6 PM, at Beacon Cremation & Funeral Service, Pere Marquette Chapel, Ludington, followed by praying the Rosary at 6:00 PM.  Visitation will also be held at the church Friday from 10:00 AM until time of Mass.
