Balk, Malcolm 5/9/1938 - 12/15/2016 Pentwater, MI Malcolm (Butch) Balk, 78, of Pentwater, MI passed away on December 15, 2016 at Mercy Hospital in Muskegon. Butch was born in Grand Rapids, MI on May 9, 1938. He graduated from Creston High School and Davenport College. Butch spent much of his adult life working at the Kent County Road Commission. He was a founding member of the Rink Rats of Grand Rapids, playing out of the old Grand Rapids Stadium (currently the Deltaplex), he later coached high school hockey and remained a Red Wings fan throughout his life. Butch was an avid golfer and had an encyclopedic knowledge of Michigan golf courses, many of which he played. He proudly served in the United States Army and spent many years volunteering for the American Legion. Butch was preceded in death by his parents, James and Marjorie Balk. He is survived by his wife, Martha Balk; his sister Joanne (Donald) Harrington; his brother James (Shirley) Balk; his children Lorilee (David) Roguska, Michael (Cyndi) Kik, Julie O'Krangley, Shelly (Kenneth) VerMeulen, and Leah (TK) Tesfae; also many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, December 20 at 11:00 at St. Vincent Chapel 637 E. 6th Street, Pentwater MI, 49449. Visitation will be at the same location for an hour prior to Mass. He remained very active in every community in which he resided, served on multiple boards and spent many hours happily volunteering. He was devoted to his family, especially to his grandchildren, spending much time caring for them in his retirement.
