Obituary

Mrs. Margaret Jane Hayes, age 84, of Mears, passed away Saturday, April 21, 2012. She was born September 3, 1927, in Belding to Fred and Margaret (Staub) Bivins. She married Albert O. Hayes in Belding on October 4, 1947; he preceded her in death October 21, 2006, after 59 years of marriage. Mrs. Hayes was a graduate of Belding High School and was employed as a bookkeeper for Grand Rapids Supply until her retirement in 1990. She was a member St. Gregory Catholic Church, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Creston VFW Post 3023 in Grand Rapids. Peggy was an avid Michigan Wolverine follower, watching all of the college events. She enjoyed watching tennis, soccer, the Olympics, and golf, especially following Tiger Woods. Mrs. Hayes was also instrumental with the founding of the Bellrockton Center in Belding. Mrs. Hayes is survived by one daughter, Carole Hammond of Grand Rapids; two sons, Bruce (Debra) Hayes of Spring Lake, and Philip (Dana Besemer) Hayes of Hart; one sister, Lucille (Mike) Penderick of Magnolia, Arkansas; one brother, Joseph (Dottie) Bivins of Grand Rapids; and a sister-in-law, Dolores (Arlyn) DeKock of Jenison. Her grandchildren, Mindy (Jim) Kracht, Philip R. Hayes, Jr, Haley Hayes, Andrew (Holli) Hayes, Albert R. Hayes, Nathan Besemer, and Madaline Valley; and great-grandchildren, Tyler Cowan, Zachary Cowan, Levi Hayes, Gino Cisneros, Jaren Cisneros, Audrey Bantiene, Jake Besemer Jr., and Jaycey Valley also survive, as does her beloved cat, Munchkin. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Alfred, Earl, Robert, Fred, Carl, and Philip Bivins; grandson, Jake Besemer; and son-in-law, Todd Hammond.The Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Hayes will be offered Friday, April 27, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church in Hart with Father Thomas Bolster presiding. Interment will be in Graceland Memorial Park in Grand Rapids, followed by a luncheon at the Creston VFW Post 3023 at 3:30 p.m. Visitation will be Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the King Funeral Home. The family requests that any memorials be directed to St. Gregory Catholic Church, 316 S. Peach St., Hart, MI 49420.
