IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mark Douglas
Nisbet
January 10, 1953 – February 15, 2023
Beloved husband, father, son, and brother, Mark D. Nisbet, of St. Joseph, Michigan, died on February 15, 2023, after an extended illness. Mark will always be loved, cherished, and remembered for his kindness, devotion to family, humble nature, and his endless capacity for love.
Mark was born on January 10, 1953, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Norma P. Nisbet and the late Stephen R. Nisbet. Along with his brothers Stephen, Brian, and Todd, Mark spent his early years in Lowell, Michigan. He was a happy child who loved playing baseball on the corner lot with the neighborhood children, attending Camp Manitoulin, and sleeping in the snow at the annual Boy Scouts polar bear event.
When he was in 7 th grade, Mark and his family relocated to St. Joseph, Michigan. He continued his Boy Scout involvement as an Honor Guard at the Mackinaw Island Fort. Mark was a well-recognized athlete at St. Joseph High School, where he played football and basketball as well as running track. Before his first football game, he was injured when a fellow player ran into him during warmups and injured his knee. Fortunately, exceptional South Bend physicians who also cared for Notre Dame players fixed his knee and he went on to set sports records at St. Joe High School, enter the school's Sports Hall of Fame, and earn a football scholarship to Western Michigan University.
After college, Mark decided to experience life outside of Michigan and moved to Los Angeles. After enjoying Southern California adventures, he returned to St. Joseph to be near his family. He joined Whirlpool Corporation, where he worked until his retirement.
Several years after returning to St. Joe, Mark met and married his soulmate, Kathleen Henderson. Few just-married couples would welcome family on the honeymoon, but Mark and Kathy were delighted to spend their honeymoon cruise accompanied by the extended Nisbet family. Mark and Kathy welcomed their son, Andrew, in 2001. Mark was incredibly proud of his son, who is currently a student at Grand Valley State University.
During retirement, Mark visited his mother almost daily to share coffee and conversation. He, Kathy, and Drew were a constant source of local support, care, and love for her, which gave such comfort to his extended family. Mark's grandfather, the late Stephen S. Nisbet, remarked that "Mark doesn't sweat the small stuff. He's thoughtful, humble, and kind; a great role model for his brothers."
Mark is survived by: his wife, Kathleen Henderson Nisbet; son, Andrew, St. Joseph; his mother, Norma P. Nisbet, Kirkland, Washington; brothers and sisters-in-law, Stephen P. (Christine) Nisbet, Caledonia, Michigan, Todd (Renee) Nisbet, Surfside Beach, South Carolina, and Brian (Mary) Nisbet, Kirkland, Washington; nieces and nephews, Sarah (Brad) Williams, Byron Center, Michigan, Amanda (Lance) McCarty, Howell, Michigan, Stephen G. (Colleen) Nisbet, Lowell, Michigan, Anne (Bill) Grill, Woodinville, Washington, Alex (Jackie Perez) Nisbet, Schwerin, Germany, Dale Crouse, Key West, Florida, Michael Nisbet, Columbia, South Carolina, and Melissa Nisbet, Columbia, South Carolina; He loved the family dog Mitzi, who brought joy to him on visits during his final days.
Mark has been cremated and his family will come together later this year for a private celebration of his life. Memorials can be made to the Leila and Cyrus Poppen Hospice Residence in Muskegon, Michigan ( https://harborhospicemi.org/ways-to-give/harbor_hospice_foundation/ ) or the Alzheimer's Association ( alz.org ).
